ARTIST BIO

\"I enjoy the tactile feeling of drawing, the touch of breath, elusive, the direct transmission from brain, heart and intuition down into my hand. The chance to make mistakes and its the imperfection of the medium that gives each drawing its chararcter\".

Guy has been a professional international award winning photographer for 29 years, living in Melbourne.  His drawing is represented by Artist Print Gallery. He has been drawing since a child and started to take it seriously as a possible career path at 15 in high school, After leaving high school went to Curtin University to study Art/Design and eventually went into photography. From then on drawing in his spare time and designing occassionally for clients. Guy has lectured on creativity and professional photography for 15 years at RMIT University and occassionlly at Melbourne University and has also taught  Drawing / Life Drawing at RMIT for 3 years and taught drawing privately. I have also done courses in 3D paper sculpture, woodblock & lino cut, print making and glassblowing.

To be viewed differently at varying distances in differing worlds of contemplation, my father an architect, vinyeron and painter taught me that all the great artists are great drawers, and that drawing is the foundation. I\'m deeply  indebted to my high school art teacher, Julie Medhurst who encouraged me with great humour, and to Sarah, Leanne and Jill who were in my high school art class for many years while many a boyish while was spent marveling them and their work.

Technical:

I draw in pen and ink after first sketching in pencil. I draw with both my left and right hands, the majority of outlines, sketching and detail are done with right hand and back up details with my left hand. I control dots at an average speed of 8 dots per second and do up to 16 dots per second in short bursts. I alternate my drawings using even fractions of 1 mm line width and the next drawing will be done completely with odd fractions of 1 mm. The feel is slightly different, and can change the graduations, but it also become like a mandala, its contemplative and takes me and hopefully the viewer to another place.The place one goes to when you sit under a tree and embrace the infinite. The larger drawings take on average  of between 20 - 160 hours to complete.

Artistic Influences:

Ronald Searle, M.C. Escher, Ralph Steadman, Michael Leunig, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Paolo Ucello, Albrecht Durer, HR Giger, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, William Robinson, Fred Williams, Rover Thomas, Robert Juniper, Brett Whitely and Italian Renaisance art. A big fan of graphic novels particualry English, 2000 AD list of characters to me is far more interesting and imaginative than many of the Marvel or DC comic book chararcters.

Children\'s Book Illustrator Influences:

Mercer Mayer, Maurice Sendak, Dr Seuss, Richard Scarry, Willy Pogany, Graeme Base, Norman Lindsey, and spent days reading and re reading Asterix, Tintin and Beebo books when growing up.
