A time-traveller’s guide to Egypt

Kyle Weyburne has continuously pushed himself to move away from what feels comfortable and familiar to work in. The current incarnation of this takes the form of a cross-disciplinary use of different mediums to produce art that questions our understanding of being (particularly in regards to religion). Kyle’s latest works extend this exploration into 21st century technology, fusing traditional oil painting with digital screens. The resulting artworks span the evolution of art from linen, to photography (1800’s), to flat screens of this century, to software from the last few years. These screens, set within oil paintings, come to life with footage taken from aquariums, outer space, classic cinematic footage and modern-day scenes which he filmed during the Egyptian revolution. All footage and imagery are very deliberately selected; playing on the human susceptibility to moving images, hypnotising the viewer as TV has the ability to do.
